3 Guys Walk Into a Bar… Only One Packed Smartly

Hey Guys,
Three guys walk into a bar...
It's the night before a big business networking event.
Guy #1 packed “options.”
His suitcase is full. Nothing goes together. He changes three times before dinner.
Guy #2 packed random favorites.
A great jacket. Great shoes. Shirts he likes. But somehow none of it connects once it’s all in the same suitcase. Shoot, now what?
Guy #3 packed with a method.
Nine pieces.
27+ combinations.
Zero stress.
Wanna be that guy? Here's how.
There’s a travel packing method making the rounds online right now called the Sudoku Packing Method. The idea is simple:
Make a 3 x 3 grid with your clothes. On the bed, on the floor, it doesn't matter.
- 3 tops
- 3 bottoms
- 3 layers
Every piece has to work with every other piece.
That’s the key.
Not more clothes, more compatibility.
So instead of packing “outfits,” you pack interchangeable pieces that all "speak" the same visual language.
That’s what you’re seeing in the boards below.
THE PLAY
This is where the magic happens.
Once the pieces are laid out, you can start moving vertically, horizontally, diagonally.
Swap the pants.
Change the layer.
Upgrade the shoes.
Suddenly one jacket becomes:
- dinner
- networking
- airport
- drinks
- casual client meeting
Same piece. Different energy.
That’s why versatile staples matter more than trendy statement pieces.
A suede jacket.
A textured knit polo.
A clean white tee.
A relaxed trouser.
Those pieces carry weight because they adapt.
The accessories multiply it even further.
Follow the lines for how the combinations work.
THE CLOSERS
Accessories are close the deal and take the combinations from “fine” to intentional.
The belt.
The watch.
The sunglasses.
The bag.
The shoes.
Those are the finishing touches that change the feel of the same core outfit.
Swap:
- sneaker → boot
- aviator → acetate frame
- hat → no hat
And suddenly the exact same outfit shifts personality.
That’s how you get range without overpacking.
NOTES ON THE GRID
The layout matters.
Row 1:
Top → Bottom → Layer
Row 2:
Bottom → Layer → Top
Row 3:
Layer → Top → Bottom
It forces you to visually test the capsule before you travel.
If something doesn’t work with multiple pieces in the grid, it doesn’t belong in the suitcase.
This is exactly how I want you thinking about your wardrobe moving forward.
Not:
“What outfit should I wear?”
But:
“Does this piece work across multiple scenarios?”
That’s the shift.
THE NUMBERS
With:
- 3 tops
- 3 bottoms
- 3 layers
You can create:
27 core combinations before accessories.
Add:
- 2 pairs of shoes
- 2 pairs of sunglasses
- belt
- watch
- hat
- outerwear variation
And the number of possible looks jumps dramatically.
Without needing a giant suitcase.
Without overthinking.
Without staring at the hotel bed wondering why nothing works together.
Here's a couple visuals so you can start to see it in action.
NOTES ON COLOR
This only works if the colors work together.
The easiest way to do that:
Choose 3 core neutrals.
Examples:
- cream / olive / denim
- navy / khaki / white
- charcoal / black / grey
That’s why these boards feel cohesive.
Nothing fights.
Everything blends.
And when everything blends, getting dressed becomes automatic.
If more color or print is your thing, go for it. Just be mindful that it all works, don't go rogue.
This way of doing things works for any genre/style so here are two additional styles so you can see what that looks like.
Same framework. Completely different personality.
That’s the point:
A good wardrobe that's designed as a system adapts to the guy wearing it ;)
Not the other way around.
Now, isn't that a much simpler way to look pulled together without stress and a ton of effort?
Yeah, I think so too :)
